Start by measuring
Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile result. Note the score and the top suggestions. Wix also has a site speed dashboard in the editor that shows how real visitors experience your pages, when there's enough traffic. Measure the same way before and after changes so you know what helped. Scores move around a bit between runs, so don't chase a single number.
The usual causes on Wix
1. Large images and galleries
Photographers, restaurants and contractors love big image galleries, and those are often the heaviest part of a Wix page. Wix compresses images, but a page with 60 high-resolution photos still asks a phone to download a lot. Show fewer images on the main page and link to a full gallery page, and upload photos at a sensible size (around 2,000 pixels wide is plenty for most uses).
2. Apps you installed and forgot
Each Wix App Market app can add its own scripts. Chat widgets, review widgets, social feeds, pop-up builders and booking tools add up. Open your installed apps and ask, for each one: does anyone use this? If not, remove it. If you only need it on one page, see whether it can be limited to that page.
3. Embedded social feeds and videos
An Instagram feed or several autoplay videos on the homepage are among the most expensive things you can add. Consider a single static image linking to your Instagram, and video thumbnails that only load the player when tapped.
4. Animations and effects
Scroll effects, parallax backgrounds and entrance animations can make a page feel slower on older phones, and some visitors find motion uncomfortable. Use them sparingly, especially above the fold.
5. Very long pages
Homepages that try to say everything, with a dozen strips and repeated sections, are slower to load and harder to read. Splitting content into focused pages usually helps both speed and clarity.
6. Custom fonts and code embeds
Several custom fonts, or HTML embeds from third parties (old tracking codes, widgets from services you've cancelled), add requests. Remove code from tools you no longer use under your site's custom code settings.
A short cleanup routine
- Duplicate the site or note your current settings before making big changes, so you can compare.
- Remove unused apps and old custom code.
- Trim the homepage to the sections people actually need: what you do, where, proof you're real, and how to contact you.
- Replace heavy galleries and feeds on the homepage with a few images and links.
- Re-run PageSpeed Insights on mobile and compare.
What you can't change on Wix
You can't pick a different server or install caching plugins on Wix. Some Wix scripts load on every site regardless of what you do. If speed is critical to your business and you've done the cleanup, it may be worth comparing platforms, but for most local service businesses, the steps above make a noticeable difference without moving.
KeptWeb's Wix website help includes reviewing installed apps with you and checking that pages load reasonably on mobile, alongside the content edits in your plan.
Frequently asked questions
Will upgrading my Wix plan make my site faster?
Higher plans add features and storage, but they don't usually change page speed much. The content on your pages matters more.
Does Wix compress my images automatically?
Wix does optimize images for delivery, but very large originals and many images per page still add weight. Uploading reasonably sized images helps.
Is a low PageSpeed score hurting my Google ranking?
Speed is one of many signals Google uses, and it's rarely the deciding one for local businesses. A slow site does frustrate visitors, which is a good reason to improve it on its own.
Should I move off Wix to get a faster site?
Not as a first step. Clean up apps, images and embeds first, then measure. Moving platforms is a bigger project with its own costs.
Do Wix templates affect speed?
Some templates lean heavily on large background videos, slideshows and animated strips. You can usually keep a template's look while swapping a background video for a still image and removing effects you don't need.
